NEAT (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis)
NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) is the energy burned through movement that isn't formal exercise — walking, standing, chores, fidgeting. It's TDEE's most variable, and most overlooked, component.
NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) is the energy burned through movement that isn’t formal exercise — walking, standing, chores, fidgeting. It’s the most variable of TDEE’s four components, and usually the most overlooked; Levine’s 2002 review of NEAT found that between-person variation can reach up to 2,000 kcal a day.
In Cookrange, you don’t have to log NEAT by hand: your phone’s health data (steps, distance, active minutes) is read, and calories burned show up as a passive number on top of that day’s fixed target. That doesn’t change the target itself — the target is only recalculated with your real data up to that point when you ask Cookrange AI to regenerate your plan.
