Calorie counting apps: which one suits whom

With calorie counters the difference comes down to almost exactly two things: how much the database covers, and how fast you can log. Someone who wants micronutrient tracking and someone who wants a grocery item logged in three seconds end up on different apps. Below is who each of five suits.

Alphabetical order. Not a ranking and not a winners' list - Cookrange sits in its alphabetical position and is not moved up.

Cookrange

Who it suits: People who want the weekly plan regenerated on demand rather than following a fixed sheet; who want a grocery item logged by barcode in seconds; and who want to stay motivated alongside gym friends. Logging, plans, streak tracking and progress history are on the free tier; AI generation is capped at 2 runs a day.

Cookrange's limits: Pre-launch (v0.9.6 internal alpha), not in the app stores. No micronutrient tracking, no wearable integration, no browsable recipe library, no fasting tracking.

Cronometer

Cronometer tracks 80+ nutrients using lab-verified USDA/NCCDB data and lets you chart blood-test results over time — a precision-nutrition, biohacking-adjacent tool. Cookrange ties a daily calorie/macro target to an AI-generated plan and builds a gym/squad social layer into the app, but doesn't match Cronometer's micronutrient depth today.

Who it suits: Tracking a specific vitamin or mineral, or correlating blood panel results with intake over time. Over 80 nutrients against lab-verified USDA/NCCDB data.

Where Cookrange is weaker: Micronutrient depth. Cookrange tracks four core macros and does not match Cronometer's vitamin and mineral tracking today; there is no blood-panel feature at all.

FatSecret

FatSecret is an established calorie-tracking app with a large, largely user-submitted food database and a genuine Turkish-market presence via fatsecret.com.tr. Cookrange focuses on a different approach: five distinct ways to log a meal, an AI-generated weekly plan, and a gym/squad social layer built directly into the app.

Who it suits: People who rely on manual food logging and do not want to change that habit. A large database grown since 2006, with a local presence in Türkiye.

Where Cookrange is weaker: Database age and community volume. Cookrange pulls barcode data from Open Food Facts and has no years-deep user-contributed archive of its own.

Lose It!

Lose It! is a US-based calorie-tracking app that runs in a shape very similar to MyFitnessPal: barcode-based logging, a large food database, and community challenges. Cookrange logs barcodes via Open Food Facts, generates a weekly plan with AI, and builds a gym/squad social layer into the app.

Who it suits: People shopping in US grocery stores who enjoy a general group-challenge format. A large barcode database and community challenges.

Where Cookrange is weaker: US product coverage and the challenge format. A Cookrange squad is not a contest: there is no shared streak - everyone keeps their own, shown side by side.

MyFitnessPal

MyFitnessPal is an established calorie-counting app with a large, global, largely user-submitted food database. Cookrange focuses on barcode-based logging via Open Food Facts, on-demand plan regeneration, and a built-in gym/squad social layer.

Who it suits: People shopping US-centric products who want a mature ecosystem. Its global food database depth is the category's reference point.

Where Cookrange is weaker: Global database depth and ecosystem maturity. Cookrange is pre-launch, with no integrations and no third-party ecosystem.

How this list was put together

This list is not a ranking and picks no winner. Names are alphabetical, Cookrange included. Each entry says who that app suits and where Cookrange is weaker on the same point. The detailed comparison tables sit behind each entry's link. Prices are deliberately absent: competitor pricing changes without notice.
